《圣经》（拉丁语：Biblia，希腊语：Β?βλο?，英语：Bible，本意为莎草纸，中文亦称耶经）可以
指犹太教和基督教（包括天主教、东正教和基督新教）的宗教经典。犹太教的宗教经典是指《塔纳赫》（
或称《希伯来圣经》），而基督宗教的则指《旧约圣经》（《旧约全书》）和《新约圣经》（《新约全书
》）两部分。
Bible（圣经）的希腊文biblion是「书」或「卷轴」的意思。这字是从byblos一字而来，byblos是指一种
生长于尼罗河畔，沼泽地带的纸草（papyrus）。将一英尺的纸草木髓切下，剥去树皮，让烈日把它晒干
，就能制成书写的材料。人要将横的木条放在直的木条上面，互相交迭，好像现代三夹板的制法。横的木
条表皮较为光滑，可用来书写；将多个断片的木条合起来，就可制成长达三十英尺的卷轴。 后来，说拉
丁语的基督徒，用biblia（biblion的众数）这字来称新旧约的书卷。
Scripture（经卷）的希腊文是graphe，意思是「著作」。在旧约，这种著作被确认为带有无上权威（比
较王下十四6；代下二十三18；拉三2；尼十34）。后来旧约的「著作」逐渐被收集，分成三类：称为律法
书（Laws）、先知书（Prophets）和圣卷「Writings，或称诗歌（Psalms）」。这些著作构成旧约的三十
九卷，就是现在的旧约正典了。
在新约希腊文圣经，grapho（当作动词使用）被解作「圣经」约有九十次；而以名词出现（graphe）也有
五十一次，差不多全部都用来指圣经。新约有几种对经卷不同的称呼：有指全本圣经（如太二十一42，二
十二29，二十六54；路二十四27、32、45；约五39；罗十五4；彼后三16），有指圣经中的个别部分（可
十二10，十五28；约十三18，十九24、36；徒一16，八35；罗十一2；提后三16），有用作「神的话语」
的同义词（如罗四3，九17，十11；加四30，提前五18）。它们也被称为「圣经」（Holy Scriptures）（
罗一2）。提摩太后书三章15节用了另一个希腊文hiera grammata（神圣的著作）。提摩太后书三章16节
强调，这些著作不是平凡的著作，而是「神的所呼气默示的」，这正是指它具有权威，在教训上没有错误
而说。
《塔纳赫》是犹太教的经典，记载关于上帝和古时犹太人的历史。《塔纳赫》亦同时是基督教圣经的《旧
约》部分。
《希伯来圣经》记载的是从上帝创造世界，人类犯罪，犹太人的历史及关于世界的预言。基督教的圣经由
《旧约》和《新约》两部分构成，而其《旧约圣经》与《希伯来圣经》内容大致相同，不过天主教版本就
多了数篇《塔纳赫》跟基督教新教《旧约》都没有的数篇经卷。《新约圣经》记载耶稣基督和其门徒的言
行与早期基督教的事件纪录，使徒书信及关于世界末日的预言。
据统计现在共有大约一万四千多种不同语言版本的圣经，尤其是“希伯来圣经”部分，而基督教新约部分
，就有大约五千三百种不同语言版本。在众古书中可说是现在世界上最多不同语言翻译版本的书。
